The president of the Romanian Constanta County Council, social democrat Nicusor Constantinescu, said Monday before the National Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) that Constanta mayor Radu Mazare will enter the race for PSD president.
Romanian Social Democrats To See Five Way Showdown For Party President
"Radu Mazare will run for the position of party president," Constantinescu said.
He added Mazare is serious about this intention and he would choose Liviu Dragnea as secretary general.
Constantinescu also said the location of the party's election congress is not important. "It doesn't matter - outside, on the beach, in the rain, in the snow. What matters is the candidacy and the votes obtained, right?" Constantinescu said.
Thus, Mazare is the fifth candidate to enter the race for the top position in Romania's largest party. Mazare will be up against four social democrat heavyweights, including current party leader and former presidential hopeful Mircea Geoana, former party leader and former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, party "renegade" Miron Mitrea and former foreign affairs minister Cristian Diaconescu.
The outcome of these inner-party elections is eagerly anticipated since it could spell an upgrade, stagnation or even scission for Romania's sole relevant leftist party and also the party with the alleged greatest number of members.
