Asked how he would feel in a society where the president is a woman and the government and parliament were to include only women, Geoana said he would feel discriminated. He added, however, that he doesn’t think Romania could reach such a dominant stage any time soon.

"To my mind, an easier first step would be to aim for a woman prime minister starting with the next elections (not this year’s parliamentary elections - e.n.),” Geoana said.

He added that if things go well, the competition for the country’s president will also be open to women for the next five-ten years.

On the current situation of women in Romanian politics, Geoana said “things are below average, as we have the only government in Europe with no female members.”
