Romanian Solider Killed In Afghanistan Awarded Post-Mortem

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Friday signed the decree granting sergeant major Chira Traian Claudiu, killed on mission in Afghanistan, the post-mortem decoration the National Order of the Star of Romania, in rank of Chevalier.

According to a press release of the presidency, Chira, 30, was decorated for his outstanding devotion on patrolling mission in Afghanistan.
 
Chira, member of the 21st Mountain Hunter Battalion, died Thursday in Afghanistan on patrol when the Humvee he was in ran over a makeshift explosive device.
 
Chira was on a patrolling mission on highway A1 (Qalat – Kabul). Around 1330 GMT, approximately 50 kilometers off Qalat, the second Humvee in a convoy of five, ran over an explosive device, according to Romania’s Defense Ministry.
 
Following the explosion, Chira, severely wounded, received medical assistance on site and was evacuated by helicopter. He died on the way to the hospital.
