Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu made a “seductive” debut at the San Francisco Opera in the lead role of Giacomo Puccini’s "La Rondine".
Romanian Soprano Angela Gheorghiu Makes San Francisco Opera Debut
"When the Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu walks into a room, even just the restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, you can't help looking around for the drop curtain. She transforms whatever space she occupies into a miniature theater, and there's no doubt about who the star is," said the review in San Francisco Gate.
Gheorghiu, 42, is very much aware of the effect she has on people, whether she is on stage or elsewhere and she is always ready for her close-up.
Gheorghiu's sorcery - both vocal and theatrical - is currently on display at the War Memorial Opera House, where she is making an overdue San Francisco Opera debut in Puccini's all-too-rarely heard "La Rondine", the paper noted.
“I really like the role," she said. "It's like Violetta Valéry (from Verdi's 'La Traviata'), but finally she's not dying for once. And it's harder than 'Traviata' because you have this very difficult aria right at the beginning,” Gheorghiu added.
The soprano will have a performance in Bucharest on December 22.
