The representatives of Romanian student organizations met with the Education Minister Cristian Adomnitei on Thursday for a round of negotiations regarding bigger scholarships and more dorms for students.

Adomnitei agreed to hike student scholarships by 15% in January next year and another 15% starting with October 2009. In addition, the minister said will consider cancelling social criteria for subsidies granted to students living outside student camps and he promised to also look into hiking subsidies for dorm accommodation.

“It is all we could obtain for now. We will continue negotiations with the next government, because we did not receive what we’ve wanted and we are not satisfied, but for now, we are giving up protests,” said Gabriel Petrea, president of the National Union of Romanian Students.

The representatives of the Romanian Students Association, or USR, however, left the negotiations early, saying the government’s offer was humiliating, “less than insufficient.”

USR’s president George Paduraru said his organization will continue the protests.
