Voicu's arrest has been extended until May 30. The decision can be challenged before the Supreme Court panel of nine judges.
Ioan Cazacu, one of Voicu's lawyers, said the intercepted phone calls used as evidence in the case have been obtained illegally, since the Romanian Intelligence Service tapped Voicu's phone for more than the legally-provided limit of 120 days.
Cazacu also argued that the defense was allowed only half an hour to study the prosecution's materials.
Voicu was arrested late-March on charges of influence peddling and fraud. Later, Supreme Court judge Florin Costiniu and businessmen Marius Locic and Costel Casuneanu were also placed under arrest in the same case, but a Court panel decided they would be investigated at large.
