Romanian Teachers’ Strike Won’t Affect High-School Graduation Exam – Education Min

Funeriu said Romania's general school inspectors informed him during a videoconference Sunday that "all the difficulties of the past few days have been resolved" and that the exam will take place as planned in all the 1,419 exam centers.

The minister added that a command center for keeping in permanent contact with local school inspectorates will be set up Monday at the headquarters of the Education Ministry.

Funeriu denied the charges made against him by education union leaders, and claimed teachers were not pressured into giving up their legal right to go on strike. He added that the teachers who were involved in the high-school graduation exam, but chose to go on strike instead, have been replaced.

Over 200,000 high-school graduates will sit the written foreign language examination next week.

According to data provided by the Education Ministry, 10% of the 3,000 teachers involved in the high-school graduation exam announced they will go on strike, and have been replaced.

Education unionists will go on a full-blown strike as of May 31, the first day of the written foreign language exam for high-school graduates.

Union leaders said Saturday that authorities are trying to "intimidate" teachers into not going on strike.
