Romanian Tourism Min Says Parliament Should Investigate All Former Liberal Ministers

Udrea’s statement came in reaction to recent requirements for the set-up of a parliamentary inquiry committee to analyze how the ministry spent public money.

"If we are talking about parliament committees, in think the former liberal government, each of its ministers, should be investigated by a parliament committee for how they spent public money. I’m not talking about three million euros, which is what the Tourism Ministry spent on promotion this year, but hundreds of millions that were spent by liberal minister. If you have a problem with the minister, ok, if not, leave tourism alone,” Udrea said Thursday.

Udrea said all the expenses of the ministry, including all contracts concluded, are posted on the ministry’s website.

"The Ministry of Tourism has nothing to hide. I don’t understand what they wish to investigate as long as all the institutions’ expenses and contracts are posted on the website. We are the only ministry that called a press conference to speak about what it has done in the first six months, we have answered hundreds of reporters’ questions recently (…) and we are accused of lack of transparency in the spending of EUR3 million on promotion,” Udrea added.

She explained the money was spent on two events organized on the seashore for Easter and May 1, Romania’s participation at 49 international tourism fairs, visits of foreign journalists and tour operators to Romania and the launch of the "Romania, the land of choice" campaign in Paris.

Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu said Wednesday that liberals decided to call for the creation of a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate the activity of tourism minster Elena Udrea.
