Traffic Police Chief Lucian Dinita said the system, comprising a video camera and long-range microphone, will eventually be installed on every police vehicle. According to people close to the matter, such a system costs EUR4,000.

The system is currently used by Traffic Police vehicles on highway A1 and road DN7. „DN7 is about 655 km long and goes through 12 counties. This is where we have seen most traffic incidents as well as contestations, especially regarding those involving illegal overtaking, speeding and right-of-way,” Dinita explained.

Sandu Buglea, country manager with importer Safety Camera Systems, explained the camera records both inside and outside the vehicle. „It is a compact system built into the rearview mirror, which provides video monitoring inside and outside the vehicle, and has four audio channels to record ambient sound. The system’s greatest advantage is it allows police officers to bring evidence to court,” he said.
