Consumers were not affected by the shutdown, as the thermal power plants of hydropower generator Hidroelectrica provided more power to compensate losses.

Cernavoda shut down Tuesday evening after a powerful storm battered the southeastern region of the country and damaged power lines connecting the plant to the national power grid.

Nuclearelectrica’s general manager Teodor Chirica said Wednesday that all power lines snapped by the storm have been repaired and the two reactors will be turned on in 36 hours and then connected to the power grid in eight to 10 hours, Thursday evening.

The nuclear plant in Cernavoda operates with two reactors, which provide around 18% of the country’s power needs, but it has initially been designed to have five reactors, of 700 megawatts each, on Canadian CANDU-type technology.
