“Romania’s aim, as a NATO and European Union member, is to paint a picture of Ukraine as a country engaged in espionage against NATO member states,” says Kulik, Director of the Research Center for Civil Society Problems, quoted by online newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda.

“Everything is connected to economic interests in the Danube area,” he said, adding that Romania intends to build several harbors on the Danube-Black Sea channel, which will be deepened, despite internationally set environment standards.

Kulik stated that the Danube region may only be an intermediate step, arguing that Romania has in store a draft law on the rights of Romanian minorities abroad and that there also exist claims on the areas around the border.

According to unofficial information, on Thursday, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry informed two Romanian diplomatic officials that they are to be expelled from the country.
