“The Romanian citizen Doina Matei had no intention of killing Vanessa Russo. The death of the 21 year-old young woman was an unintentional act,” judge Pavone wrote in motivating the sentence decision in this case.
Matei was accused of murdering Italian Vanessa Russo by stabbing her in the eye with an umbrella, following a quarrel at a subway station in Rome.
The Romanian was sentenced in December to 16 years in prison for manslaughter, even though prosecutors accused her of first-degree murder.
Matei said she never intended to murder Russo: “I hit that woman, but I never wanted to kill her.”
