Romania Imported 65% Less Used German Cars In ’09

The number of used cars brought to Romania from Germany decreased last year by 65.3%, one of the reasons being the German clunkers program, according to the German Federal Statistics Office.

Last year, 213,000 old used cars were registered in Romania, down 29% on the number seen in 2008, while new car registrations decreased by 59%, to 116,000 units, according to the Romanian license and registrations issuing authority.

German used car exports decreased last year by a total 15%, or 68,500 units, compared to 2008, to 389,200 units. The value of these cars reached EUR5.2 billion, according to the German statistics office. The number of used cars sold to European countries diminished by 27%, to 244,669 units.

Exports towards Asia, however, grew in volume, by 16.4%, while exports towards Africa grew by 19.1%.

German authorities launched in 2009 a clunkers program with a EUR5 billion budget. The program concluded early September 2009.
