The head of the emergency unit within the Arad County emergency hospital, dr. Monica Puticiu, told MEDIAFAX that the patient spent five hours in surgery for an abdominal gunshot wound, where the bullet hit the small intestine and the colon.

According to the quoted source, surgeons removed the damaged parts of the small intestine and colon, but there was no bullet to recover, as surgeons found an exit wound as well.

As for the aggressor, police said he is a Romanian citizen of Slovak ethnicity and he was on the most wanted list since July 2008, for various thefts.

At the same time, investigators found that the gun used was a 9 mm Magnum 357. At press time, the attacker was being questioned by the Prosecution Office within the Arad Court.

According to criminal prosecutor Pavel Palcu, the officer, working in the Public Order division of the Nadlac Police, was shot around 04:00 local time, when he tried to identify a suspect.

According to investigators, police received a call Monday evening, from a local in Nadlac, who informed them that the abandoned parish house was constantly visited by a suspicious man. A two-man police unit went to check the building, and found several items, including clothes, binoculars and a box of surgical gloves.

"Seeing the items as suspicious, police officers organized a stakeout and waited until, towards the morning, a man showed up. When officers approached him, the suspect drew his gun and fired one shot, wounding one of the officers in the stomach," said Camelia Tuduce, spokesperson for the Arad County Police.

The second police officers, assisted by three community police officers found nearby, at the same stakeout, immobilized the suspect and took him to the station.

The wounded officer is 29-years old, married, and has a two-year old child.
