Romanian Women’s Handball Team Wins Against Japan In World Championship
Romania’s national women’s handball team won Sunday against Japan, 37-28 (17-17), in the preliminary C group of the World Championship taking place in China.

Romania scored through: Puscasu 9 goals, Amariei 6, Stanca 6, Neagu 4, Manea 3, Moldovan 3, Varzaru 2, Vadineanu 2, Nechita 2.
Japan scored through: Uegaki 8 goals, Sakugawa, Arihama şi Fujii, 5 goals each.
In the first match of C group, which took place Saturday, the Romanian team won 51-17 (20-7) against Chile, earning four points. The C group ranking after two matches is led by Romania (goal average plus 43), Hungary (plus 42) and Norway (plus 26), each with four points, followed by Tunisia, Japan and Chile (each with zero points).
According to the championship rules, the top three teams of group A plus the top three teams of group B will make up the first main group, while the top three of group C plus the top three of group D will make up the second main group. The semifinals will be fought between the top two teams of the main groups.
The semifinals will take place on December 18, and the 2009 World Championship finals are scheduled for December 20.
The reigning champion is Russia, followed by Norway and Germany, the top three teams in the 2007 World Women's Handball Championship, held in France.
The Romanian national team is the only one in the history of women's handball to attend every edition of the World Championship since 1957, winning the gold once (1962) and silver twice (1973 and 2005).
