Romanians May Drive Cars Registered Abroad Only 90 Days – Draft

Exceptions from this rule are granted for cars registered to the people driving them in Romania, cargo transporters or rented vehicles driven by people employed by the owners of the registration, and for vehicles used on the basis of a leasing contract.

The act’s note explains that the number of foreign-registered cars driving in Romania has risen significantly following European Union accession. „This trend has become more noticeable in the last two years, when Romanians became aware of the possibility of cheaply registering vehicles to individuals or firms in Bulgaria, especially,” says the note.

„The users of vehicles registered in other states are tempted to break traffic laws often and even cause accidents and flee the scene, counting on the authorities’ difficulty in identifying and punishing them,” says the act before adding that, in 2009, more than 10% of serious road accidents involved vehicles registered abroad.
