“The money will be refunded within 45 days, in accordance with the Fiscal Procedure Code, only based on complete documentation the applicants have to submit at the fiscal administration (…),” the mentioned sources said.

The Romanian executive is to approve the procedure on rebates granted to car owners on Tuesday.

The proceedings to refund the difference resulting from the country’s former controversial tax on car registration and the new pollution tax, to be enforced as of July 1, will be regulated by norms included in Methodology to enact government ordinance 50/2008 on setting pollution tax on cars.
In May, the Senate adopted a daft law initiated by the Democratic Liberal Party which canceled the car tax and stipulated the money collected for the tax is to be paid back within 90 days from the payer’s request.

The Senate also adopted an amendment raised by the committee for economic matters, stipulating the Ministry of Economy and Finance is compelled to pay back the money collected as special taxes for cars within 90 days from the payer’s request.

Romanian Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu said at the time that the senate’s decision was unnecessary, as the government had already solved the issue concerning car tax rebates by replacing the tax on car registration with the pollution tax.

The act is pending discussion in the Chamber of Deputies, which is decisional chamber in the matter.
