Ciuhodaru, who put forth the bill, said patients ending up in hospital emergency rooms over voluntary alcohol abuse should either pay for their medical services or do community service, as they will be considered uninsured.

Ciuhodaru added a large number of alcohol abusers end up in emergency rooms and their treatment requires significant financial resources and medical staff, which are scarce in Romania’s healthcare system.

The bill is pending debates in a plenary meeting of the Chamber of Deputies, as it was previously enacted by the Senate.
