Ruling Party Is “Researching” Treason Complaint Against President
Iordache also said that the president’s rebuttal of the process equals to “negating the Constitution”.
“Let us check the Constitution for the definition of the criminal complaint and the manner in which the Parliament can pass it for certain acts. Let us see what are the reasons, how we research it, how we file it with the Parliament, let us see the vote. Saying no to it from the start means negating the Constitution,” said the former justice minister.
He added that filing the complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office is “fated to fail”, as the president has immunity against prosecution for the duration of his term in office.
According to Romanian law, the president can be prosecuted if a complaint is filed by a simple majority of MPs, and then approved with absolute majority, case in which the president is suspended and the complaint is forwarded to the Supreme Court.
PSD leader Liviu Dragnea requested on Sunday, in a speech at a party national council meeting, that Iordache and party treasurer Mircea Draghici finish the high treason complaint against the president and file it with the Parliament as soon as possible.
