“I do not have an emergency decree (on amnesty and pardoning, ed.) shelved,” said the social-democrat leader, when asked if he had any knowledge of such an initiative.
However, when asked if he requested Justice Minister Tudorel Toader to draft such a decree, Dragnea responded that he requested a solution for alleged judicial abuses made in the past couple of years in Romania.
The social-democrat leader also announced a party national council meeting in mid-December for administrative issues.
The leader of opposition party USR, Dan Barna, requested President Klaus Iohannis on Monday to take part in every cabinet meeting scheduled for December, so as to block a possible emergency decree for amnesty and pardoning teased by the ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD).
The opposition leader called back to a similar move made by Iohannis in early 2017, when he chaired a cabinet meeting of the Sorin Grindeanu cabinet when rumors appeared that it would pass a decree on the matter.
According to the Romanian Constitution, the president can take party in cabinet meetings which debate problems of national interest such as foreign policy, defense or ensuring public order, or at the behest of the country’s prime minister otherwise. The president will also chair the meetings he takes part in.
