Ruling Party Leader Urges Palestinian Embassy to Correct Statements on Israel Embassy Situation
Romania's Lower Chamber chairman, Liviu Dragnea, requested the Palestinian Embassy to Bucharest to correct statements according to which he ensured the ambassador that Romania will not move its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, stating that it did not reflect talks between the two.

“I have also read the statements made by the Palestinian ambassador following our meeting on yesterday (Monday, ed.). They absolutely do not reflect our talks. I have clearly said what I also said publicly countless times: the Foreign Affairs Ministry finished its analysis on a possible relocation of Romania’s Embassy to Israel, and the document was forwarded for approval to institutions which have attributions in the area of foreign affairs and national security. Taking into account the recent evolution in the Middle East peace process, the analysis is in a continuous review process,” Dragnea told MEDIFAX on Tuesday.
The social-democrat leader said that a possible relocation should be based on constitutional provisions and respect international law.
His reaction comes after Palestinian Ambassador Fuad Korkaly announced in a statement that Dragnea assured him the Romanian Government will not stop pursuing a relocation of the country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority’s Embassy welcomed what it called as being “Liviu Dragnea’s decision”, stating that it applied to the Romanian Government. The two officials had a meeting on Monday, during which they discussed the issue.
“After today’s (Monday, ed.) meeting I am certain of the fact that all of Romania’s political forces unanimously understand the importance of Jerusalem and its role in global policy and security,” Kokaly says in the statement.
Dragnea previously announced in April 2018 that the Romanian Government adopted a memorandum to decide the beginning of procedures to relocate the country’s embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the latter a city claimed as capital by both Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Since then, Romania’s Foreign Ministry made an analysis on the opportunity of the relocation, while Prime Minister Viorica Dancila stated earlier this year that the executive will ultimately decide in favor of the move. The chief of cabinet later backtracked on the statement, saying that she expressed, in fact, a personal opinion
