The head of state added he will treat the current cabinet the same as he did the previous one. Romania’s government is formed of the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Liberal Party, and Basescu is widely seen as the latter party’s ‘de facto’ leader.

The president said the new government had no grace period from the media and was criticized even before it was formed.

"This is a government that needs to be broken in, but it’s a government that has made a thorough assessment of what it inherited," Basescu said, adding he appreciated the fact that the new government didn’t rush to send to Parliament the state budget draft drawn by the previous liberal government.

Asked whether he considers the current government is competent and responsible, Basescu said he wants to believe the Cabinet will prove it deserves the confidence it was invested with. He said he will talk about his confidence in the government after it presents the state budget draft in Parliament.

"The grace period ends with the presentation of the 2009 state budget,” Basescu said.

The head of state added, however, that he will not change his relationship with the government, because he is obliged by the Constitution to watch over the good functioning of state institutions.

"I won’t treat it any differently than I did the previous government led by (liberal) Tariceanu," the head of state said.

He also said the 2009 state budget must assign as much as possible to investments and protect those seriously affected by the economic crisis.

The government plans to approve the 2009 state budget draft in the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
