Basescu added that this was „not a political statement,” but the reply he received from central bank governor Mugur Isarescu.

The banks control around 27% of the local banking market and contributed to Romania’s recovery from recession, he said.

Papoulias, in turn, said the Greek banks are well-capitalized and remain an important financing instrument for businesspeople in both countries.

Papoulias is on a two-day official visit to Romania at the invitation of the Romanian head of state.

The Greek head of state will also meet with Prime Minister Emil Boc and Romanian Patriarch Daniel on Tuesday. He will attend an economic forum on Wednesday and will hold talks with Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana and Chamber of Deputies Speaker Roberta Anastase.

A full-blown strike was announced in Greece Tuesday and Wednesday, with unionists protesting over a 2012-2015 austerity program, which is currently debated by the Greek Parliament.

Basescu said last week in Brussels, after the European Council meeting, that not a penny from structural funds meant for Romania and other EU states will be directed to Greece.
