Romania Is Ready To Join Schengen Area, Must Solve Infrastructure Issues – Interior Min
„Romania is ready to become a member of the Schengen area. The assessment report regarding the country’s maritime borders shows that certain measures adopted by our country can be considered effective,” Blaga said during an assessment of the ministry’s activity in 2009.
According to the minister, Romania has one of the most efficient maritime surveillance systems.
Blaga said the country is most vulnerable when it comes to its infrastructure, adding Romania is expecting two Schengen assessment missions in 2010 and the Government must take rapid measures to solve infrastructure issues.
Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Thursday Romania’s accession to the Schengen area entails laying off a considerable number of border police officers who will have to be integrated into other structures, adding he already held talks on the matter with Blaga.
