Romanian Mangalia Shipyard Staff On Strike Over Pay Raise

Approximately one third of the 3,000 staff at the Daewoo Mangalia Shipyard in Constanta County, southeastern Romania, went on a full-blown strike indeterminately as of Monday, as the management of Daewoo - Mangalia Heavy Industries SA has denied their request for a pay raise.

Company union leader Marian Florian said over 2,200 employees demanded a 300 lei (EUR1=RON4.2163) raise and the yearly loyalty bonus. Company management only agreed to a RON40 wage increase, which prompted the unionists’ strike.

Gemal Memetcea, the company’s human resources manager, said the strike is illegal and an appeal was filed in court against it. According to Memetcea, the employees’ requests are abnormal, given the current global and national recession.

Memetcea added the company is waiting for the Court of Constanta to rule on the legality of the strike. Florian said the unionists will acknowledge and observe the court’s ruling, but they will resort to other forms of protest until the management meets their demands.

Romania, which has been hit by the deepest recession in at least 20 years, is cutting public salaries, pensions and social welfare benefits as it has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of gross domestic product under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year.
