Tomac also announced that PMP leadership will meet next week to discuss its list for the elections, adding that he hopes the former head of state will decide to run for a spot as MEP.
“It’s not a secret for anyone that, if President Traian Basescu were to run, this would reset the entire political scene. I do not believe that we have a better prepared politician in Romania to understand current European realities. I want to remind that he was member of the European Council for ten years and Romania’s voice really mattered there. It would be an immense gain for Romanians for the voice of President Traian Basescu to be heard in Brussels, because Romania has a huge emptiness there,” Tomac said.
The PMP leader added that an eventual candidacy of Basescu will likely be successful for the party.
European Parliament elections are scheduled to take place on May 26 in Romania.
