“It was an evening for entertainment for all players of Veszprem. As most players had been at the World Championship, this was the first time when they could all gather to have fun. They were dancing and enjoying without having had any alcohol,” Hunyadfalvy said.
“It seems that Marian Cozma was mistaken for someone else while he was dancing with his girlfriend and he was attacked. The fight continued in the street. The other players intervened to help him. Marian was stabbed in the heart and died. Ivan Pesic was stabbed in kidney from the back, and surgeons removed one of his kidneys. Zarko Sesum, who hurried to help, was hit in the head when he was on his knees. The players were not in for a fight, they weren’t drunk, they didn’t provoke anyone and they became victims,” Hunyadfalvy said.
Veszprem Mayor Janos Debreczenyi said local authorities will help financially the families of the players.
According to the Hungarian press, Debreczenyi said the families of the three handball players are on their way to Veszprem.
He said police are using in investigations images on the surveillance cameras in the club. “It’s a catastrophe, it’s unbelievable”, Debreczenyi said.
Romanian handball player Marian Cozma, aged 26, was killed Saturday night in a club in Veszprem, Hungary. Serbian Zarko Sesum and Croatian Ivan Pesic, other two players of the team MKB Veszprem, were involved in the incident.
