Romanian State Employees Might Have Higher Wages Starting Dec If Budget Revenues Allow Hike

The Romanian Government might decide to raise public sector employees’ salaries at the end of the year, so state employees will recover the money lost following wage-cut measures implemented in 2010, if budget revenues continue to increase, Finance Minister Gheorghe Ialomitianu said Friday.

The minister said state employees’ wages are likely to be increased in December to reach the level before cuts.

In July 2010, the Government implemented harsh austerity measures to help the country step out of recession. Apart from a series of fiscal measures, Romanian authorities reduced public sector employees’ salaries by 25%.

In January 2011, state employees’ base salaries were hiked by 15%.
