United States To Deploy Some 20 Missile Interceptors In Romania – Romanian Foreign Min

Baconschi met Friday with his Bulgarian counterpart in Sofia and held talks on the negotiations between Romania and the U.S.A regarding the former’s participation in the U.S. missile defense system.

Baconschi said the country will inform all its neighbors, especially those that are EU and NATO members, about the unfolding of negotiations to implement the U.S. missile defense system.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said early February Romania accepted a proposition of U.S. President Barack Obama, who has invited the country, a NATO and EU member, to participate in the development of the United States’ antimissile defense system and the country will host elements of this system on its territory.

U.S. deputy secretary of state for arms control Ellen Tauscher said the United States plans to locate in Romania three SM-3 interceptor batteries, each containing eight missile interceptors.

Tauscher also said the Washington Administration does not plan to deploy Aegis antiballistic systems in the Black Sea.
