Romania Eyes Partnership To Lure Scandinavian Tourists

Munteanu, who is attending the International Tourism Fair in Berlin, Germany, held during March 10-14, said Romania eyes the Scandinavian market and will team up with Germany’s TUI to lure tourists from Nordic countries.

TUI Scandinavia operated in Romania until the beginning of the 1990s.

Germany’s TUI, one of the world’s leading tour operators, will resume operations in Romania this spring with a charter flight from Munich to the Romanian Black Sea Coast, which will be operated by Air Berlin as of May 18.

The International Tourism Fair in Berlin, which brings together over 11,000 exhibitors, is considered the biggest tourism fair in the world.

Romania has 40 exhibitors which mainly promote the country’s cultural tourism, the Danube Delta, as well as the ecotourism and agritourism.

TUI has a 29% market share, nearly 13 million customers annually and 1,800 own travel agencies. The Group also owns 276 hotels in 30 countries.

In 2006, TUI discarded its flights to Romania and eliminated from its catalogues any destination towards Romania, citing bad accommodation conditions, high hotel prices, too much noise and dirty resorts.
