Stoicescu stressed that over the next 20 years, traffic on the future airport would reach 60-100 million passengers per year and two million tons of cargo per year.
Moreover, the airport will have six runways and it will operate intercontinental flights regardless of weather conditions.
Stoicescu said the drafting of the feasibility study was put off for 2009 on lack of funds.
In his turn, Daniel Achim, director within the Transport Ministry, said the airport in Targu Mures, central Romania, submitted the only financing offer to access European Union funds via the Operational Transport Program targeting upgrade works.
Achim said the global economic crisis slowed down passenger air traffic in Romania this year, compared with the 20% increase in 2007 when airliners carried 7.8 million passengers.
