Romanian President Pushes For Investments In County’s Agric, Food, Tourism Sectors
Basescu addressed the Israeli businesspeople in Romanian, saying he would rather avoid the harsh remarks of the Romanian press as regards his English speaking skills.
The Romanian head of state spoke about Romania’s economic situation and also offered details on the country’s recent lending agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
He added that certain industries have gradually developed in Romania, stressing "they would probably shift towards the East over the next ten to fifteen years."
Basescu highlighted the need for investments in these sectors and referred to an European Union evaluation according to which Romania has the capacity to feed 80 million people, yet, it currently imports 70% of the food necessary for its 22 million people.
Basescu is on official visit to Israel at the the invitation of Israeli President Shimon Peres.
