Strike Not A Solution For Education Sector – Romanian PM

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said on Monday that a strike “is not a solution” for the education sector right now, but that he has faith in the “maturity of teaching staff” and that the solutions to the teachers’ problems are in accordance with the current budget situation.

Boc said that Monday, starting at 12 p.m., the Ministries of Finance and Education will discuss the issue with union representatives, in order to come up with a solution. The union plans to go on strike Tuesday, when seventh and eighth graders should take a national Romanian language and literature exam. The talks aim to convince unions in the education sector to call off the protest.

The exam is to be taken by over 420,000 students. Should the Government fail to find a satisfactory course of action, the unions threaten to hold strikes on May 13 and 21, when the mathematics and history/geography exams are scheduled to take place.

Romanian education minister Ecaterina Andronescu said she will try to convince the unions to call off the strike on the day of the exam, otherwise the exam will have to be rescheduled.
