Fresh Volcanic Ash Cloud Might Hover Over Western Romania Monday Morning

A fresh cloud of ash from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull might hover over Romania's western region Monday morning, in the layer between the ground and an altitude of nearly 6,000 meters, Romania’s Environment Ministry said Sunday.

The ministry said it constantly monitors, via the country’s weather authority and the national environment protection agency, both the trajectory of the ash plume and the concentration of ambient air particles.

Three flights to Italy were cancelled Sunday on Bucharest’s international airport Otopeni and another two flights were cancelled on international airport Baneasa, because of a new volcanic eruption in Iceland and the ash cloud hovering over Europe.

The volcano, located under a glacier about 120 kilometrers southeast of the capital Reykjavik, started erupting last month and wrought travel chaos across Europe for nearly a week as authorities grounded aircraft due to a cloud of ash.

The volcanic ash cloud that has wreaked havoc across Europe in recent weeks has reappeared over parts of Southern Spain and impacted air travel once again. The cloud is spreading from the North Atlantic across northern Portugal and Spain, closing airports across the region.

The ash, from eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, has spread south from the North Atlantic and is also covering parts of southern France, according to charts provided by Eurocontrol, which coordinates air traffic across Europe.
