Colonel Victor Cornel Moldoveanu, commander of the 528 Braila Research Battalion, said soldier Costel Beschea (35) died after a military vehicle overturned during the drill.
“The accident occurred during a complex military exercise. The transporter involved in the accident, a C 79 amphibian (…) overturned at a turn, apparently due to a wrong maneuver of the driver,“ Moldoveanu said.
According to the doctor on scene, Angel Trifan, Bechea was half out of the turret when the vehicle overturned.
He said Bechea died from severe stomach and head injuries.
The second soldier in the vehicle sustained no injuries.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense said in a statement it “deeply regrets” the accident and expressed support for the Bechea’s family.
A commission formed of representatives of Division 1 Infantry “Dacica” is handling the investigation, the ministry said.
Bechea is survived by his wife and one child.
