Smithfield Buys Local Meat Business in Arad, Western Romania
Smithfield, the largest pork producer in Romania and globally, has recently acquired local meat processor Maier Com in Arad, western Romania.

Sources said the US company bought the local 25-year-old business in January this year.
Maier Com was founded in 1994 and primarily processed poultry. The company was fully owned by Radu Maier and delivered meat products to several counties in Romania. The local company has over 80 employees. Maier Com had a turnover of RON10 million and a net profit of RON250,000 in 2017.
Smithfield Romania is part of Smithfield Prod, owned by China's WH Group. Its activity centers around its slaughterhouse in Timisoara, western Romania.
Smithfield Prod has around 1,000 employees and is the biggest meat exporter in Romania.
WH Group also owns Smithfield Ferme in Romania, operating pig farms. Smithfield group has over 50 farms and produces over one million pigs for slaughter a year.
