Social Democrat Party Leader Resign Following Heated Executive Committee Meeting
The chairman of Romania’s Social Democrat Party (PSD), Viorica Dancila, announced her resignation on Tuesday night, following a heated party executive committee meeting which saw almost the entire leadership quit, amid reports of verbal conflicts among members.

Together with Dancila, Executive Chairman Eugen Teodorovici and Secretary-General Mihai Fifor have also resigned from their roles. Deputy Chairmen Carmen Dan, Lia Olguta Vasilescu, Gabriel Zetea, Roxana Minzatu, Marian Oprisan and Dragos Benea also filed their resignations on Tuesday evening
In a press conference following the meeting, Dancila deemed the decision as a “moment of dignity”, in response to her landslide loss in Sunday’s presidential election run-off.
“I understood the opinion of my colleagues, the fact that a reset was wanted and that someone needed to assume the result of the elections. This is not a moment of weakness, it is a moment of dignity and I consider that I must resign from the role of PSD chairman,” Dancila said following the meeting.
However, Bucharest Sector 1 Mayor Daniel Tudorache said that the former prime minister only resigned at the very end of the meeting, after previously refusing to heed other PSD member’s calls in this regard.
Other reports from the meeting detail a tense turn of events, with numerous verbal conflicts among the social-democrats' top brass, and several well-known party members asked to leave due to not having a right to vote in the executive committee.
The party will be led on an interim basis by Lower Chamber Chaiman Marcel Ciolacu, who will coordinate a team of eight regional deputy chairman. A party congress to elect a new permanent leadership will be held in February 2020.
