Social democrat senator Serban Nicolae submitted Thursday with Romania’s Senate a draft law on eliminating the country’s car tax.

The senator told Mediafax that the draft aims eliminating the articles in the Fiscal Code that regulate the car tax and that were introduced in 2006.
Minister of economy and finance Varujan Vosganian on Thursday expressed hope that the ordinance to amend the car tax will be “responsibly” debated by Parliament.
The car tax is viewed as “illegal and immoral,” because it goes against European directives and against living standards.
Vosganian said that the current tax was voted by the majority of MPs, including the people who submitted the motion against it.
“Had everyone understood that the only form of protection allowed by the EU is that in which cheaper cars require a lower tax, the problem would have been solved,” said the minister.
The Democratic Liberal Party this month announced it would submit a simple motion called "Cancel the first registration tax.," which demands the cancellation of the tax and refunding citizens’ money.
Vosganian said that Ford threatened to call off its plans to come to Romania if “borders open” and Renault said it would move parts of its production unit to other countries.
