Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila announced on Tuesday that the ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD) decided to appoint former development minister Paul Stanescu as executive chairman, the second most important office in the party.

The chief of cabinet, who is also the party's interim chairman following the imprisonment of Liviu Dragnea for corruption offences, also announced that the social-democrats' National Standing Bureau will meet every Monday in the next period, while the larger executive committee will meet at least once per month.
“We all understood the vote’s significance and I have ordered an internal party analysis, to identify the mistakes we made. We decided that the office of executive chairman will be taken by Paul Stanescu, the National Standing Bureau will meet every Monday, and the Executive Committee to meet once per month,” the Romanian chief of cabinet said following hours of internal party talks on Tuesday, set to continue into the evening.
Paul Stanescu, a former deputy prime minister and regional development minister under Viorica Dancila’s cabinet, took a back-seat role within the party in last couple of months, after openly he openly rebelled against former party chairman Liviu Dragnea in September 2018. This led to Stanescu losing all of his cabinet offices shortly after.
PSD is due to hold an executive committee meeting Tuesday, starting with 18.00 local time, to decide the party’s direction following a poor showing in Sunday’s European Parliament election and the arrest of its previous chairman, Liviu Dragnea, for corruption offences.
