Social Democrats To Back Uninominal Voting Law Assumed By Govt

Romania’s leftist opposition Social Democratic Party, or PSD, has discarded its own draft on the uninominal voting system and will back the draft for which the government took responsibility in parliament, Senate chairman Nicolae Vacaroiu said Friday.

Vacaroiu added the democrats’ attempt to team up with social democrats comes late and PSD has already decided to back the government’s version.

He also said this year’s legislative elections would be under the uninominal voting system.

Early December, the Constitutional Court ruled unconstitutional certain aspects of the law for which the government took responsibility and lawmakers have to reexamine and amend the respective provisions.
