Some 4,000 Police Officers Marched Across Bucharest Towards Govt Headquarters
Nearly 4,000 police officers organized a rally Saturday afternoon and marched across capital city Bucharest up to the government’s headquarters, urging amendments to the legislation so that they may benefit from legal assistance in work-related cases and life insurances.
6 viewsAt the end of the protest march, Toader Paraschiv, the secretary general of the National Union of Police Officers and Contract Staff (SNPPC), told MEDIAFAX that he is very pleased with the way the protest march was organized. Moreover, an official of the Road Traffic Office within the Bucharest General Police Department congratulated Paraschiv and said no incident occurred during the march.
Protesters urged amendments to the legislation, so that outrage sanctions require a simpler procedure, but the list of claims also includes life insurances, in accordance with the current legislation, and the increase in the budget of the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform for material expenses to support police officers' activity.
Paraschiv said the ministry might prepare a new internal order regulation and harshly criticized this initiative, stressing the ministry plans to teach police officers how to greet their superiors.
Officials of police officers' unions in Bulgaria, Belgium, Scotland, Spain and Slovakia joined the rally of their colleagues in Romania and even took the floor.
They stressed the importance of social dialog between the union of police officers and the authorities, pointing out that life insurances are a "must" for police officers.
The ministry sees police officers' protest march and rally as unjustified, given that talks with the protesters have already generated solutions for their claims.
