Romanian President Says Constitution Revision Should Go Beyond Issues Addressed In Referendum
Basescu told officials of parliamentary parties, during consultations on the revision of the Constitution, that referendum results showing Romanians want a single-chamber Parliament with a maximum 300 lawmakers are just a starting point for a deeper revision of the country’s fundamental law.
He also said his term in office will not fall under the rules of a future Constitution and called on politicians to stop alleging he is trying to impose his own ideas and grant the president more power under the future law.
Opposition lawmakers, of the Liberal Party, Social Democratic Party and Conservative Party, left the consultations a few minutes into the meeting disgruntled that the group of independent lawmakers had also been invited.
