Romanian Far-Right Party Pushes Dismissal Of President Basescu

Romania’s far-right Greater Romania Party, or PRM, will start proceedings next week to dismiss Romanian President Traian Basescu, whom they accuse of high treason, party secretary general Gheorghe Funar said Friday.

Funar told a news conference the party’s actions have to do with the fact that the president did not intervene to stop attempts by the Hungarian minority party UDMR and Hungary to seize part of Romanian territory.

“The president had no reaction to their attempts, you’ve never heard him approaching the issue. He was also indifferent to the fact that UDMR members repeatedly broke constitutional order and the law of national security,” Funar said.

Funar accused Basescu of having met with bishop Laszlo Tokes “twice, secretly”.

“They’ve agreed to plan a new territorial division for Romania to make it easier for Hungarians to obtain local authority on ethnic criteria,” Funar said.

Funar added PRM will call for a plenary session in parliament and draft accusations against Basescu.

“Under the Constitution, the president must be dismissed for high treason,” he concluded.
