The Romanian Government decided to lay off over 2,000 employees in the energy companies under the subordination of the Economy Ministry in 2009, who will further receive severance pays.

Thus, the list with layoffs recently approved by the Government includes: Romania’s state-owned brown coal mining company – Societatea Nationala a Lignitului Oltenia, SNLO, with 600 employees, Autonomous Regie for Nuclear Operations, , with 306 employees, Termoelectrica, with 200 persons, Turceni Power Plant, with 150 persons, Craiova Power Plant, with 150 people, Minbucovina, with 137 employees, Moldomin, with 102 people, Electrocentrale Bucuresti, with 100, Rovinari Power Plant, with 75, Electrocentrale Deva, with 70, Electrocentrale Galati, with 60, SN Carbunelui Ploiesti, with 45, and Minvest Deva, with 35 employees.

Economy minister Adriean Videanu said two weeks ago that around 5,400 employees under the subordination of the Economy Ministry will be laid off by year-end.

According to an official document presented by MEDIAFAX news agency early July, the state companies in the energy sector will lay off over 5,000 employees between 2009 and 2012. Most of the layoffs will take place in 2009, and the state will pay over 100 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2238) as severance payments to the state budget.
