Romania’s New Justice Minister Takes Office

Romania’s newly appointed justice minister Catalin Predoiu took office Monday morning, ending the interim term of acting defense minister Teodor Melescanu.

Melescanu, who was set to be nominated for the justice minister position, told journalists he has some regrets, but has always preferred his position as head of the Defense Ministry. Melescanu told his successor the justice minister has an interesting, key role.
 
Predoiu announced Monday upon taking office that he has suspended his law practice, has discarded his businesses and withdrawn from the managing board of savings bank CEC.
 
Predoiu, a lawyer, was appointed justice minister Friday by President Traian Basescu, at the proposal of Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu.
