Romanian President Might Choose Not To Promulgate Teachers’ Wage Hike Law – Minister

Romanian labor minister Mariana Campeanu said Friday that president Traian Basescu might not promulgate the law raising teachers’ wages considering he called for prudence in the context of the international financial crisis the day before.

"We’re waiting to see if the law gets promulgated. After President Traian Basescu’s statement in Brussels yesterday evening, when he said everybody should be responsible, maybe he won’t promulgate it. If he said that, he probably considered this too, but I’m not in the position to say what the president should decide,” Campeanu said Friday.
 
Basescu said Thursday in Brussels, where he attended the European Council, that budget resources should be directed toward productivity instead of consumption to help lower effects of the economic crisis to follow the current financial turmoil.
 
Asked about the possible effects of a wage hike for teachers in this context, the president said that is an internal matter, to be discussed “at home”.
