"Regardless of Chisinau position, we will be very consistent in supporting the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova. We do not judge by the regime in power there, that has resulted from their elections, we’re not the ones in a position to contest or question those results,” Basescu said in response to a question of a representative of the Romanian community in Croatia.

"There are regimes and regimes, which are more or less hostile to Romania or the EU. We must look beyond regimes or leaders, we must look toward history and, from this point of view, I am in favor of pushing for Moldova’s integration among countries in the Western Balkans in terms of cooperation with the European Union,” Basescu continued.

The head of state added Romania will in no way obstruct negotiations’ that Moldova should start regarding an association or cooperation agreement with the EU, as the country’s partnership agreement with the EU expires soon.

"We will support the continuation of negotiations with the Republic of Moldova, regardless of who is prime minister or president after this election, because we are two independent states but blood doesn’t turn to water,” Basescu said.
