„Romania is able to ensure farming supplies for 80 million people. Romania imports 70% of local consumption, therefore something is wrong with our policies,” Basescu said.
According to Basescu, the development of the country’s farming sector depends on boosting the local food industry and the development of farming production and small businesses in rural areas.
The head of state said Romania must establish regional centers meant to process and distribute farmers’ products, stressing that large companies specialized in sales, will never buy merchandise directly from farmers.
Basescu also pointed out that Romania can use state funds and European Union financing for further investments meant to upgrade and extend its obsolete irrigation systems.
