Romania To Keep Subsidizing Coal Mining After ’10 – Official

Romania will continue to subsidize bituminous coal production after 2010 as well, even if the International Monetary Fund disagrees, Economy Ministry secretary of state Tudor Serban said Thursday.

„This sector needs to be relieved of a historic burden, which means a high volume of debts and arrears. (…) We will have to keep finding subsidy solutions,” Serban said at the MEDIAFAX Talks about Energy conference.

CNH, the bituminous coal mining company, is the biggest debtor to Romania’s budget, and its debts continue to rise. It is also one of the ten state companies under the IMF monitoring.
