Tariceanu proposed consultations on the matter with parties and unionists.
“I agree that wages should be hiked, but these hikes should not only take into account seniority, as it used to be during the communist era, but also the teachers’ professionalism. A real reform in the education system entails that the results and the quality of the system needs to be rewarded,” Tariceanu said.
He added wage hikes need to be realistic, and a 50% increase cannot be sustained by the country’s economy.
Tariceanu had a discussion Wednesday with the education minister Cristian Adomnitei, on the latter’s position with regard to the wage hike in the education system, and said the 1% of Romania’s gross domestic product required by the hike would bring about other requests from unionists.
